An unusual theft has shocked Dortmund: the rare Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum) named David has been stolen from Rombergpark Botanical Garden, one of the city’s most visited attractions.

Garden staff discovered the disappearance in the morning. The giant plant, known for its massive bloom and strong odor, had been dug out and removed overnight. Investigators believe the theft was planned, as the container with the plant weighed more than 50 kilograms.

The Titan Arum blooms only once every few years, and its flowering lasts just two days – drawing thousands of visitors. David was the pride of Rombergpark and a botanical symbol of Dortmund.

Police are analyzing surveillance footage and asking the public for help. “This is not just a plant; it’s a living part of our scientific collection,” said a park spokesperson.

Locals have expressed outrage and support under the hashtag #BringBackDavid, and city officials have promised to increase security for rare exhibits.

Despite the loss, Rombergpark remains open, and staff hope that “David” will one day return home.
